Broken, Bitten, or Bleeding- Tips for Handling a Common Dental Emergency

A dental emergency can be scary, painful, and expensive. When trauma to the teeth occurs or sudden pain or swelling develops, it’s essential to locate an emergency dentist. If your regular dentist in Peoria is not available, or you’re traveling, you can usually search online to find an affordable dentist who will accept your insurance plan or offer financing options. Until you’re able to get emergency dental care, the following tips may be useful.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Holding it by its crown, rinse the tooth thoroughly in water. Don’t attempt to remove tissue fragments or scrub the tooth. If you can, place the tooth back in its socket, and hold it in place. Alternatively, place it in a cup of milk. See an emergency dentist immediately.

Lip or Tongue Bite

Clean the area, and apply a cold compress if swelling is present. If bleeding continues, visit a hospital emergency room.

Broken Tooth

Rinse with warm water, apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, and contact your dentist immediately.

Toothache

Clean between the affected tooth and adjacent teeth with dental floss to be sure the pain isn’t due to a trapped object. If pain persists, see your dentist when possible.

Objects Lodged in Teeth

Try to remove the foreign object using dental floss. Do not use sharp instruments. See your dentist as soon as possible if you cannot dislodge the object.

Suspected Broken Jaw

Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, and visit an emergency dentist or hospital emergency room immediately.

Cracked Tooth

Avoid biting down on the tooth, and see your dentist in Peoria as soon as possible.

Don’t Put It Off

If you’re experiencing pain, don't wait to see if the symptoms go away. Early treatment of a dental emergency can prevent tooth loss and reduce medical costs. For the best outcome, seek help from an affordable dentist immediately after the dental emergency occurs.
