History of Peoria, IL
Peoria, IL has stood as a town in the United States since it became incorporated in 1835. However, its true roots go back much, much farther than that. Archaeological studies have revealed that people have inhabited the area now known as Peoria all the way back to 10,000 BC.
The first Europeans to explore the location were French explorers Louis Joilet and Father Jacques Marquette in 1673. During their travels they encountered the Illini Indians, a confederacy made up of several Native American Tribes.
During the rest of the 17th century, French explorers built several forts throughout the region and even created the first settlement in Illinois. However, in 1763, the settlement was legally obtained by the British, though still very much French in practice. Then, it became an official part of the United States territory in 1778 and a new town was created by military commander George Rogers Clark, that would eventually become the location of downtown Peoria.
In 1835, Peoria, IL was incorporated as a town and then as a city in 1845.
