Dr. John Pappas of Maple Shade Warns About Dangers of Dental Cream

PEORIA, IL- Dentists are warning of denture cream following a recent study. Those who use an excessive amount of denture cream could be exposing themselves to high levels of zinc, which can lead to pain, weakness and poor coordination. Prolonged exposure to zinc can result in nerve damage, low blood levels and bone marrow failure. GlaxoSmithKline, the makers of Poligrip, have stopped the manufacturing and distribution of dental adhesive creams that contain zinc. Some local dentists are suggesting patients stop using cream all together. Watch WMBD Interview with Dr. John Pappas about dental cream dangers.

Statement of Denture Cream Adhesives – 4-7-2010
Denture Cream Adhesives have recently been linked to health ailments including polymyeloneuropathy and pancytopenia. In a recent diagnostic workup and differential diagnosis, by Spain, Lest, and DeSousa at Thomas Jefferson University, PA, a 47 year old woman suffered from symptoms of weakness, pain, and poor coordination in her hands and legs.. She was diagnosed with low copper levels and high toxic zinc levels. The only
source of the zinc came from her exposure to denture creams which is absorbed directly through the soft tissue of the mouth. The low copper levels and high zinc levels were blamed for nerve damage, low blood levels of white blood cells, red blood cells, platelets, and bone marrow failure.

We do not know the complications of inadvertently swallowing adhesives. It has been suggested that malabsorption of vital nutrients may be a result of adhesives in the digestive tract. Regardless of the possible long-term effects of denture adhesive creams, no denture-wearer suffers from a denture cream nutritional deficiency. Therefore, we should have no
indication for the use of these creams.

The best adhesive for a denture is water between the denture and tissues of the mouth. If there is excess space between the denture and tissues resulting in a lack of adhesion, then the denture should be relined, remade, or implants should be placed to stabilize the dentures.

There are presently 35 million denture wearers in the United States. Of those it is estimated that 30% are using dentures adhesives. It is certainly an abuse of an over-the-counter substance, and dentists should use caution prescribing it.

Dunlap, IL- Jayce Stone didn’t get to go trick-or-treating Saturday night. The 5-year-old from Peoria Heights was home with the flu. But her good friend Karley Boyer, 8, and Karley’s dad, Kent Boyer, also of Peoria Heights, went door to door and collected candy for Jayce. Now that Jayce is feeling better, the two youths and their dads, Boyer and Shannon Stone, decided to donate the majority of that candy to a good cause.

They and other local families came to Maple Shade Dental Group in Dunlap on Monday afternoon to turn in their candy – well, most of it anyway – as part of the Cash for Candy, Candy Turn In, an event to promote healthy teeth and send treats to the troops. ”I kept some candy,” Jayce admitted, with a wide, relatively cavity-free grin. “I love Pixy Stix, and I kept those.”

The dental office and Better Banks offered $1 per pound for candy turned in at the event, which occurred at both the Dunlap and East Peoria Maple Shade Dental Group offices. The candy will be sent overseas to soldiers serving in the U.S. military through Operation Santa. In addition to giving up their candy, people who showed up for the event were given the opportunity to donate their cash reward, or a portion of it, to Operation Santa to help pay for shipping costs.

“Keep it all, it’s going for the troops,” Boyer said, when he and Karley were asked about the $4 they would have received for their four pounds of candy. That was the response of many of the people who showed up to turn in candy, said Caitlin Willey, marketing director for Maple Shade Dental Group. ”So far, it’s been great and everyone is really happy to help the soldiers,” she said.

More than 100 pounds of the sugary stuff was turned in at the Dunlap office during the first hour of the three-hour event. Local businesses also donated items to put in a candy-free treat bag for each of the children who gave up their candy. The goodie bags included items such as toothpaste, toothbrush, free movie tickets and a coupon for a small pizza. This was the first year the dental office has hosted the event, but it likely won’t be the last, Willey said. ”With so many kids eating so much candy and soda, and so many kids getting tooth decay, we thought this was an awesome way to promote healthy teeth and not eating so much candy. That’s really important, especially around Halloween,” Willey said.

Global sugar consumption by children is about 50 million tons annually and increases by about 2 percent per year, according to information provided by Maple Shade Dental Group.

Dunlap residents Lisa Steinkoenig and her three children, Abby, 10, and Ashley and Jack, both 8, and all three students at Banner Elementary School, turned in seven pounds of candy at the event. Jack said he has a friend at school whose dad is serving in the military in Afghanistan, so when he heard about the chance to help troops by giving up some of his Halloween candy, he was excited to do so. Ashley and Abby also thought the event was a great idea. ”I wasn’t sad to give my candy even though I really like chocolate,” Ashley said. “It’s for the soldiers.”

Temporomandibular disorder may affect over 10 million Americans, and most suffer pain without ever knowing what’s wrong or how to correct it.

With TMD, even pain can add to the confusion because it’s often so diverse. Symptoms can include headaches, neck and shoulder pain, jaw pain, sensitive teeth, ear congestion, dizziness, difficulty chewing and swallowing, jaw snapping and tingling fingertips.

Carol Barbee, 41, had learned to live with the slight popping noise her jaw made as it snapped in and out of its socket. She had frequent back pain, headaches and numb, tingling fingers but saw no connection between that and the barely audible popping noise in her jaw.

Barbee, formerly a pediatric nurse at Methodist Medical Center and now with Circle of Life Homecare, said she often had terrible pain in her face and thought it was sinus infections.

All that changed one day about two months ago when her dentist, Dr. Rod Willey, heard the popping noise in her jaw. A CT scan confirmed TMD, a condition that involves the jaw, jaw joint and surrounding facial muscles.

Willey is founder and CEO of Maple Shade Dental Group, 11825 N. Knoxville Ave., Dunlap, (www.maple-shadecenter.com), a practice with six dentists who do general family dentistry as well as specialties including treatment of TMD.

With TMD, chewing food can become a painful problem because the jaw joint no longer functions smoothly. The facial muscles become fatigued and stiff as chewing becomes more difficult.

Willey has treated hundreds of patients for TMD during the past 20 years. Rather than trying to treat sore muscles, he works to realign the jaw with a process of muscle relaxation and then a brace that holds the jaw in proper alignment.
Barbee said her pain was relieved within days of starting treatment.

Willey said, “I had one patient cry and tell me for the first time in 20 years she was sleeping through the night.”

With a specialty in neuromuscular dentistry, Willey treats the dental bite, muscles and joints. By relaxing muscles in the face, it becomes easier to see where the jaw should naturally align for a smooth bite.

The orthotic or retainer that holds Barbee’s bite in the correct position is clear plastic. When it’s in place in her mouth, it’s virtually invisible.

Barbee said her father’s popping jaw is even more pronounced.

“He’s 82, and he’s learned to live with various amounts of pain,” she said. Her father said he’s not interested in going through treatment for his condition.

Willey said his TMD patients have ranged in age from 8 to 75. He said braces sometimes create beautifully straight teeth but can exacerbate the bite, causing problems years later.

Another of Willey’s patients, Liz Hargens, said she went to a chiropractor with severe neck and shoulder pain. She woke up in the middle of the night with stiffness in her jaw. She went to her family physician thinking she had an ear infection.

“I didn’t have the clicking noise in my jaw,” Hargens said, referring to one of the classic symptoms of TMD. “But instead of finding an ear infection, my doctor said something’s wrong with your jaw. You need to see your dentist immediately.”

She called Willey’s office and when she described the problem, she was told to come in immediately.

A CT scan confirmed TMD.

“Two years ago, I started choking every time I ate. At first I thought it was because I wasn’t chewing carefully, so I really concentrated. I still choked,” she said.

“My neck and shoulder pain was so severe I saw a chiropractor and feared I might have to give up my computer job and find another job.”

Hargens, 48, said days after she started wearing a temporary orthotic, her pain was virtually gone.

Her health insurance does not cover this treatment, and she has worked out a monthly payment plan with Maple Shade Dental Group.

Willey said treatment costs vary widely, but an initial consultation is without charge.

“It blows my mind that this is not covered. It’s not a dental issue, it’s a medical issue,” Hargens said. “The pain got so bad I couldn’t sleep. I was concerned I had a tumor.”
